picture a day, special edition: international dateline

Itinerary for March 16, 2008:

Wake up in Christchurch and breakfast in the tent before the sun rises.

Toss the tent around while packing up.

Walk to the airport because you´re about to spend 24 hours either hanging around various airports or sitting on planes.

Consider the lack of parking spaces at the Christchurch airport.

After arriving at the domestic terminal in Auckland, take the well-signed walk to the international terminal.

Wonder who buys possum fur.

Spend 5 hours in the airport, which then turns into 6 hours.

Stare at the plane wondering why you´ve ever thought flying was a good idea.

Land in Buenos Aires with a smile after 12 hours.

Picture Buenos Aires from the airport bus window.

Roam around for 3 hours trying to find a place to stay.

And finally, find a nice, quiet restaurant.

Any answers yet to who buys possum fur?

No, although the standard spiel we hear is: because possums are an introduced pest, a trade in their fur will reduce their numbers. I´m (extremely!) skeptical that market pressures will control the population. In fact, wouldn´t a brisk trade encourage they remain in New Zealand?
