picture a day: arthur's pass national park, new zealand

Itinerary for Feb 21, 2008:

Wake up on a high-altitude meadow an hour from the peak of Mount Avalanche.

Filter water...seriously.

Stop to enjoy the plant life.

Marvel at Crow Glacier.

Meet a cheeky bird, called a kea, at the summit.

Go in for a close up of this ham.

Continue along down a rocky saddle.

"Skate" down a massive scree field that started up there,

and ends down there.

Finally, make it to the Crow Valley and rest.

Leah! You weren't kidding about that skree! SCARY. I'm glad you survived.

Thanks for the post and pictures David!

How did you take the last picture of Leah? Where is the sun that the tent appears translucent?

I must reiterate my delight with your "picture-a-day" series. It's like reading Manga--do you know there is Manga Shakespeare?--but without the over-drawn, flamboyant characters with pointy chins.

Without the rainfly the body of the tent is transparent; it's made of a light, flexible and, most thankfully, insect-proof mesh. On clear nights (and when we don't think it will be too chilly) we abandon the rainfly and enjoy the stars.

Isn't it awful! Fortunately it was so long (or high) that I couldn't actually tell how long it was going to take us until we were almost done. And then it was too late. At least we didn't have to go up it.
